Memory Foam Mattress - Rocket Science in the Bedroom

When you set out to buy a memory foam mattress, you should have a thorough knowledge about the product itself. These mattresses cost money and you should arm yourself with information to make sure that you are getting your money's worth.

What Is Memory Foam?

This is basically a synthetic polyurethane foam to which chemicals are added. The material was originally designed for the use of astronauts going to space in their rocket ships. The chemicals increase its weight and density. Different combinations bring about variations in the density and texture of the material. This can be understood by looking at the foam's grading, which will be discussed below.

The foam basically molds itself to fit the body contours precisely. This ensures that the joints and spine receive optimal support during sleep. It is temperature sensitive and becomes softer at higher temperatures; it also rebounds to its original shape quickly.

Grading of foam is done in a number of ways. This includes checking its density in pounds per square foot. Most brands of memory foam have a density of 4 or 5 pounds. Some may go down to as low as 2 to 3 pounds. The ILD rating means the Indentation Load Deflection rating, which tells you about the firmness or softness of a mattress. What you should keep in mind is that as the ILD rating of a mattress increases, it becomes firmer.

Grading can also be done by taking resilience into consideration. This checks the springiness of the foam. The abbreviation H.R. shows that the material is highly resilient and hence more durable when it comes to withstanding compression forces. The tensile strength rating may also be mentioned. This indicates the extent to which the foam can be stretched. This value is not as useful as the above indicators.

Practical Considerations

Depending on the manufacturer, you may notice that the memory foam you bought has a peculiar smell. This can last from a couple of days to weeks. It may bother people who are sensitive to smells. To combat this, all you need to do is keep the room well ventilated and wash the sheets frequently. If you have an ozonator machine, that can be used effectively to get rid of the smell.

A good memory foam mattress does not need a box spring support. Most branded manufacturers place a sturdy sheath of polyurethane to give support to the upper layers. If you want to increase the bed's height you can place it on an even platform base. You can test the item you are planning to buy by checking the degree of indentation at various parts of the mattress when you sit or stand on it.

Your Whole Family Can Enjoy an Estes Rocket

People dream of going into space. However, not everyone can fly out into space. One way that everyone can enjoy going into space is by shooting an Estes Rocket. Model rocketry is something that the whole family can enjoy, and you can find models for all levels of experience. Everyone can get in on it, even if they are just enjoying the show, or helping to find the pieces when they land.

You may find an Estes Rocket that is right for you in any toy store or discount department store. They have models that are all set up and ready to go. All you have to do is add the engine and you are ready to go. These are great for a novice user, since they require next to no work on your part. Kids like these rockets, because they are shiny and catch the eye. One drawback is that they aren't as sturdy as rockets that you build, and they don't fly nearly as high, since they aren't built for the more powerful engines. However, if you want to start in model rockets, this is a good place to start.

If you are more experienced in rocketry, then you can find an Estes Rocket kit that you might like. Estes has a lot of kits that you can build yourself, so that you can make them just the way you want. This gives you a bigger range of what engines can go into your rocket, and how high it can fly. You can also get many different sizes of rocket engines through Estes, so that you can experiment to find out which rocket size works the best for you and gives you the best results.

You can also find spare parts and accessories to make your Estes Rocket more fun. One thing that your family can enjoy is using an altimeter. An altimeter runs on a small battery and fits into the nose cone. It measures how high up your rocket went. If you use one with your rocket, then you and your family can track how high your rockets go, and see if you can beat your personal best distance.

The Earthbound Rocket

Image : http://www.flickr.com

While supercar is a subjective designation and the characteristics change from decade to decade most of the 'ten top' lists include cars with very high hp engines, 2-meter wide bodies and rear wheels mounted with 335 mm tires. However, rules were meant to be broken particularly when the rules are flexible to begin with. So enter the Rocket.

The Rocket's body style is as far away from the Super Ferraris and Lamborghini's as one can get and still be a car. The hood resembles the end of a vacuum cleaner wand while the chassis is cigar shaped. The wheels and suspension linkages are exposed. The cockpit is enclosed on the sides but open on top and there is no windscreen so the driver is always exposed to the elements. The name is appropriate since the body does resemble a rocket lying on its side on wheels.

It was the brainchild of a former racing driver named Chris Craft. It was also his first project. Although Craft considered himself a good craftsmen, he was fully aware that we was not a car designer so Craft hired Gordon Murray to design the Rocket.

Gordon Murray is considered a top Formula One chief designer and his cars have won five world championships. Murray was also responsible for the McLaren F1 road car.

One can therefore expect that the Formula One philosophy will be expressed in the Rocket. And it is. The narrow body, exposed wheels and suspension linkages, open cockpit with no windscreen are considered to be pure Formula 1. Also true to Formula One, the chassis is constructed from nickel-bronze as a space frame, covered with light alloy inner panels and glass-fiber out panels. The engine is utilized as a stress structure to support the rear suspensions.

The Rocket is powered by a Yamaha motorcycle engine FZR 1000's 1002 cc straight 4 with 5 valves per cylinder. It is capable of a maximum power of 143 hp at 10,500 rpm, and 77-lbft torque at 8,500 rpm.

The engine is paired with a 5-speed sequential Yamaha gearbox, and then to a special final drive that incorporated limited slip differential and reverse gear. The gearbox had no reverse.

The Rocket was extremely light weighing only 400 kg. This provided an optimal power-to-weight ratio. It also gave the Rocket outstanding maneuvering and braking capabilities.

The brakes were front ventilated, cross-drilled discs with 4-piston Brembo calipers; rear cross-drilled discs with 2-piston Brembo calipers.

As tested by Autocar, the Rocket could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds and had a top speed of 129 mph.

The Rocket can still be purchased on special order but the price is very high, in the same range as the Lotus Esprit GT3. However, since it accommodates only one passenger, offers no protection from the elements and has no storage space it would certainly not be practical for every day commuting. There is a saying that "the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys." This applies to women as well. The Rocket is a fun car, a toy for those who can afford the price. However, it would be fun to drive if only one time.

Getting That Bottle Rocket to Fly

You do not need to be a scientist to be able to make a bottle rocket, but you need to approach it like one, in the sense that you need to have the right tools and materials in place.

First gather all the necessary material you will need to construct a bottle rocket. These include a bottle of course. Any will do, but a 1 liter size soda bottle is preferable.

You will also need a bottle of rubber cement, paint thinner (1 can), a roll of masking tape, a hose clamp (1 inch) and a manila folder.

You should also have the following: a couple of 2in nails, two pieces of wood one measuring 2x4x12, and another 6x1/2x18; four sheets of balsa wood (6x4); five wood screws, an inch long.

An electric junction box, a 3" thin steel (about 1/8" diameter); a 12" string, a copper tubing 12" long, and a test tube stopper. In this project the size has to be 4 with an opening in the middle.

As for the tools, prepare a compass, drill scissors, sand paper, hammer, marker angle, air compressor, jigsaw, and a screwdriver. The size will vary according to the wood screw you selected.

To build the bottle rocket, begin by washing and drying the soda bottle. Use the paint thinner to eliminate all the glue, and take off the labels as well.

Take the balsa wood, and use the market to highlight a 5x3 shape (right triangle). Use the jigsaw to cut out the shape, and apply the sand paper to smoothen the edges. These will serve as the fins of your rocket.

Stick the fins onto the bottle with the rubber cement. Make certain that they are equidistant from each other. The masking tape will be used for straightening out the fins.

Take the compass and make a 4" circle. Use the scissor to slice a line from the outer circle to the center. Fold it into a funnel shape. Glue it, and add some tape. Put it at the top of your bottle, and you have its nose setup. Leave the glue overnight and then you can remove the tape.

Making the launching pad for the bottle rocket is easy. Take the 2x4 wood and cut it in half. Lay them so that each is approximately 18 inches separate from each other, Get the 18 inch wood and put it on the 2x4 so that both sides are resting on it. Use the screwdriver to drive a wood screw into the 18in board. Repeat the process on the other side, and the platform is complete.

Next take the junction box and inert a screw so that the junction box is connected to the platform. Drill a hole into the box so that the test tube stopper can fit in. Put the stopper in there. Place the copper tubing into the stopper. Connect the air compressor with the tubing using the hose clamp.

Get the wire and shape it into a horseshoe. Secure the string at the center of the horseshoe, and put inside the electrical box. Drill a hole in each 2x4 wood piece, and the platform for the bottle rocket is finished.

Take the launch pad outside, and hammer a couple of nails into the base so it is attached to the ground. Pour 20 ounces of water into the bottle, put a pin in its neck, set the air compressor to 45 psi. Pull the string and watch your bottle rocket fly.

The Razor Pocket Rocket Miniature Electric Bike - Endless Hours of Fun

The Razor Pocket Rocket miniature electric bike is actually a scaled down version of a real street bike which has been designed and built particularly for children, particularly those who love the thrill and excitement of revving up and whizzing round.

This electric bike may be pretty small in size but this thing can move - it can reach speeds up to 15 mph, and I have it on authority that it can hit 20 mph going down hill! However, it does have variable speeds controlled by a twist grip throttle. It is just as well that it sports big 10 inch pneumatic tyres which ensure a smooth ride. Noise is also kept to a minimum due to the chain driven motor and there is an all important hand operated brake.

You will find that the Razor Pocket Rocket is powered using 2 x 12 volt batteries which do hold out well when charged, the manufacturer states that charging for between 4 an 6 hours will give 45 minutes constant driving. Others I have spoken to say they charge the batteries over night and the youngsters can ride on and off for a full day without losing power.

The most disagreed about fact about the Razor Pocket Rocket is the age range for which it is best suited. Razor USA recommends this miniature bike for youngsters age 13 and over, but, this age seems to be off target as many tall, older with the result of pain to the legs and knees. There are those who would argue that this miniature bike is better suited to the 8 to 9 year old age range, but I also know of children as young as 5 riding this electric bike. Personally, I think you know your child and his/her capabilities best, so long as there is adult supervision and the area in which they are riding is safe and traffic free they will certainly have hours of fun.

Some Razor Pocket Rocket Miniature Electric Bike Facts:

Dimensions: 36 x 20 x 21 inches

Weight: 42 pounds

Power: 2 x 12 volt batteries

Max Speed: 15mph

Max. Weight: 170 pounds

One advantage of the Razor Pocket Rocket miniature electric bike, even with all the likely scrapes and crashes is that it seems to come out of them pretty well, so good on durability and I am led to believe that spare parts can be obtained pretty easily. Another positive advantage for all of us who shy away from any technical stuff, this miniature bike requires very little assembly.

Something which is vital with this toy is a good helmet, knee pads and elbow pads for safe, injury free riding.

What do you get for your money as well as the bike?

Included are:

*2x 12 volt batteries

*Battery charger

*Tools

The overall consensus of opinion would seem to be that kids just love the Razor Pocket Rocket, it is sleek, speedy and durable - so much so that even adults can have a go!

Stomp Rocket Junior Glow Kit Review

One of the hottest toys to fly off the shelves this Christmas will be the Stomp Rocket Junior Glow Kit toy. Not only is it lots of fun for the littlies, it's priced at less than fifteen dollars which makes it a perfect budget friendly gift idea.

Not only that, but it has just won the Top Toy of the Year from Creative Child magazine and the iParenting Media Award for excellent product.

So let's look at it in more detail to see if the Stomp Rocket Junior will be in your child's Christmas stocking this year.

Who is it for?

The manufacturers recommended age is for ages 3 years. We think this is about right, although children as old as eight will still enjoy playing with it. There is an Ultra Stomp Rocket for older children as well.

What do you get in the pack?

The pack comes with four glow-in-the-dark rockets, the plastic stomp pad that is attached to a flexible tube, and a stand for placing the rockets onto.

How does it work?

It's quite a simple concept. You place your rocket onto the stand, connect the tube from the launcher pad to the rocket and then step on the launcher pad which pushes air into the tube and launches the rocket into the air. Therefore you don't need batteries, fuel or anything harmful - just good old fashioned air power.

The pad itself is easy to use - just stomp on it! As a bonus it helps your child get rid of some of their excess energy!

How high does it go?

The Stomp Rocket Junior reaches about 100 feet into the air. So you'll need a lot of space to use it and obviously you'll need to use it outdoors, although sometimes you may be able to use it indoors if you have a large space. Since the rockets are foam, they won't damage anything (or anyone).

Now reaching those heights does mean that sometimes, when your rocket returns to earth, it can get lost. Fortunately the rockets are glow in the dark and you get four in the pack. You can even buy more refills if you need them.

Where do you get it from?

Since it's going to be a popular toy this year, you'll find it online and offline in most good toy stores. Have a look in the sports and outdoor play section or ask the service attendant for help finding it.

The general consensus among consumers seems to be that DysonToy vacuum, while a great success with children, life is short when it comes to quality. Wooden Toy Gift Ideas

Wooden toys make great gifts for consumers who want to provide a quality toy to kids. As classic toys available to online shoppers, wooden toys are worth the price, especially because they last longer than most plastic toys on the market today. Some wooden toys can also be recycled after a child is finished playing with them. This article discusses eight wooden toy ideas gift buyers can find online.

1. Wooden train sets. An old-fashioned train set includes a train, track pieces, and decorative buildings, trees, and objects. Together, these pieces enable a child to simulate the activities occurring in and around a train station.

2. Wooden dollhouses. Give a little girl a dollhouse and she will be ecstatic. Whether playing alone or with siblings or friends, dollhouses provide children with endless hours of great, imaginative play and the memories will last a lifetime.

3. Alphabet blocks. Quality wooden blocks with painted or printed letters are ideal for children developing print awareness. When a block set contains more than one block for each letter of the alphabet, school-age children can use the blocks to spell words and play word games.

4. Wooden xylophone. This wooden instrument is often painted in bright colors. A child can use the wooden xylophone to discover the differences in sound created by a musical instrument.

5. Wooden rocking horse. All children love rocking horses and they look great in any home. This toy has a reputation for being dangerous. However, a beautiful hand-crafted rocking horse is safe for small children with direct adult supervision.

6. Wooden cars and trucks. Just like the train station, wooden cars and trucks are fun for multiple ages of children, especially preschool boys. They can spend hours moving cars and trucks around on the floor.

7. Wooden puzzles. Preschool children should practice arranging objects according to patterns, including colors, shapes, numerical patterns, and sizes. A wooden puzzle provides a small child with a hands-on activity that is both fun and intellectually-stimulating. Some toy makers provide wooden puzzles in sets.

8. Wooden kitchen items. High quality fruits and vegetables as well as cooking utensils are available from wooden toy makers. For example, with wooden spoons, cutting boards, spatulas, bowls, canisters, and baking pans, children can play for hours in a pretend play kitchen.

Buying wooden toys requires just a small amount of online research. Pictures and written descriptions from the manufacturer provide consumers with helpful information, including whether toys are painted with non-toxic paint. Wooden toys endure for so long that children can grow up and pass them down to their own kids.

Moving With the Gear-Train of Modern Science

Fire was the first discovery and wheel was the first invention. Since that time, we have traveled far. Science has taken us to territories we could not have envisaged some centuries ago. 20th century was when science really came into its own. It produced magic realism for us. Half of our present day inventions were inconceivable a century ago.

Science had brought great laurels in every field but the one place where it has really shone is technology. Today, we have access to some of the most unbelievable technical inventions. A few centuries ago, a mastermind called Leonardo da Vinci made the first blue-print for an aero plane. Today, even the economy class, domestic seaters have become passé. It is time for the new avatars. Who would have thought that we could fly miles above the ground on a machine that is streamlined to fight air resistance?

A few days ago, NASA launched a Space Shuttle called Discovery. It is supposed to use truss bands and solar wings to propose a new means of solar reception. Imagine, a tangible metallic object run on hydrogen fuel, stationary in space, thousand miles away, bringing us news, data and newer means of improvement.

It's not only about the aerial endeavors. Vehicles which run terrestrially are packed with newer inventions by the day. The Lamborghini, Masseratti, and Maybachs have technology written all over them. These are the mechanical devices which have made us a Nano-race.

We have rewritten the rules for acoustics and the auditoriums and theater studios are a testimony to this. We have come into a digital age. Computers have given way to laptops and then to notebooks and palmtops. Picture-tube televisions have metamorphosed into LCDs and Plasma. They offer High Definition Imaging which again is a vanguard formula.

Landlines took a leap with mobiles. The mobiles have converted into a complete island of entertainment and communication.

Internet has brought the impossible within means. It has made online education possible through its familiarized territory. A teacher in Spain can teach a student in Nigeria with the help of Elluminate whiteboards and Voice Chat modules.

Heat Sensor technology and technical receptors have advanced to such an extent that we can make refractors which respond to heat and temperature variations a hundred miles away.

Mathematicians such as John Nash; scientists like Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton, and many others have turned the tables of the world. Theory of Relativity and Gravitational Constant has been the cornerstone of many scientific inventions.

Science has really beautified life. Today, you can visit your ailing relative on the other side of the globe within a day. You can look at an award ceremony held in London, sitting in a nook of Algeria. You can convert thousand and thousand pages of data into a pin size chip and still have plenty of space left.

You cannot come back from the dead but that's probably the only thing you cannot do. The borders of time and space are certainly shrinking.

5 Tips For an Outer Space Kid Birthday Party Theme

Space fascinates many children, and also makes for an excellent kid birthday party theme. There is a lot you can do with rockets, aliens, stars and planets. Get creative and see how many decoration, game, and food ideas you can come up with to further this fun theme. Try starting with these five suggestions to get things going! Your guests will have a great time celebrating your child's birthday with a touch of sci fi style!

Tip 1: Hang the Universe on your Wall

If you are hosting the party at home, then get some construction paper and get to work! An outer space kid birthday party theme is best complimented by stars, moons and planets. Cut out these familiar shapes then decorate them with glitter and colored glue. Try cutting separate pieces from different colored paper. For example, if you wish to make a Saturn planet, the actual body of the planet could be red and the rings can be cut out in purple. These same wall hangings can be made two sided and dangle from the ceiling.

Tip 2: Make Your Own Rocket Ship Centerpieces

Creating three dimensional rocket ships out of colored construction paper is easy. Coil a cylinder topped with a cone, add a few fins and you are done! These can be placed at the center of tables. To add stability, try placing a bag of sand inside or anchoring them to a piece of cardboard at the base. Your child can add windows and logos using paints, markers or glitter and glue.

Tip 3: Don't Forget the Otherworldly Visitors

Take this kid birthday party theme wherever you want by adding in your child's favorite elements. For example, a few aliens or flying saucers can be worked in as well. Just because it is an outer space theme doesn't mean you must stick with planets and stars. Aliens can be made in all colors and shapes, so get creative and add variety to your décor.

Tip 4: Plan a UFO Toss

If you are in need of games to go with this kid birthday party theme, consider doing a UFO toss. This activity works best outdoors or indoors when ample space is available. Purchase Frisbees at a dollar or discount store. Cheap plastic ones work fine. Also buy some silver spray paint and paint each Frisbee. Then, divide up the party goers into pairs and start tossing those UFOs! The pair that can catch the "UFO" at the greatest distance wins!

Tip 5: Deciding on an Out of This World Cake

The cake should also compliment your outer space kid birthday party theme. If you plan to order a cake from a bakery, make sure you request a fitting design. Most can provide a book or images of possible design options. These may include a few rocket ships or space themes. If you do not see one you like, ask if you can make a special request. On the other hand, if you plan to make your own cake, purchase food coloring and dye the icing. Dark blue or black should be used over the entire cake, with yellow and white icing for stars. A plastic toy rocket ship could be added to finish the look.

A Razor MX500 Dirt Rocket Electric Bike Review

The scooter craze of the late 90's and into the 2000's was caused by the Razor brand of scooters. This brand manufactures a variety of electric powered ride on toys, electric scooters, kick scooters, and a few human powered vehicles. This brand has received a number of "Toy of the Year" awards from major magazines.

The miniature motocross bike, the Razor MX500 Dirt Rocket is great for young teens. This miniature motocross bike is powered by a 500 watt electric motor and looks just like a scaled down version of an actual motocross bike. Because the motor is chain driven, it's incredibly quiet, even at different speeds.

Even though the motocross bike is scaled down, riders can fully enjoy the experience of motocross riding without paying big bucks for it. The frame geometry is almost identical to that of a real motocross bike. The motor provides enough power to ride up to 17 mph, which is plenty for riding on dirt trails or pavement. The riser handlebars and dual suspension provides a smooth, comfortable ride on most terrains.

With a single charge, users can ride this scaled down motocross bike for up to 10 miles. Other features include the double crown fork and retractable kickstand. The Razor MX500 Dirt Rocket is best suited for teens 14 years old or older, and has a weight limit of 175 pounds. One of this motocross bikes' major benefits is its tires. They are knobby and provide exceptional grip when cruising on rougher terrains.

The motor is another of its benefits. It's incredibly quiet and emits no exhaust, unlike larger, gasoline powered motors. Another benefit is the charge time. From no charge, the Razor MX500 Dirt Rocket will fully charge in 8 hours or less. This means riders will have more time to enjoy riding this miniature motocross bike.

There is one disadvantage though; the weight limit. The weight restrict may limit users of this miniature motocross bike. At the age of 14 and upwards, teens may grow a great deal in a short time span. If teenagers get this bike when they can still obey the weight limit, they might grow to be too heavy to use it within months of getting it.

However, this is just a minor drawback because it will likely only affect a small number of teens. There is one more minor setback and that could be the warranty. It only covers the first 90 days after purchase. If anything goes wrong past this time frame, owners will have to take care of things on their own.

You can find numerous customer reviews on this product at Amazon.com. The majority of buyers feel that this product is worth the price they paid. Many reviews state that the miniature motocross bike worked perfectly, right out of the box and that their children love it. Unfortunately, some of the product reviews aren't as favorable. Some people claim that the motor won't fully charge and the bike doesn't run for more than a few minutes. Other problems reported include tire malfunction, missing parts, and trouble getting replacement parts.

For maximum enjoyment and to ensure it can be used for long periods, users should keep it fully charged and follow the manufacturers' directions.

Ben 10 Toy Shopping - Checklist For Parents

With the Ben 10 cartoon series having gone from strength to strength since 2005, the accompanying toy range has also exploded across toy shop shelves. The continuing success of the brand means that more and more Ben 10 toys and accessories are finding their way into view of our children and subsequently into the path of our wallets. If you are just starting out buying toys in the Ben 10 world, here is a quick check list to guide you in the right direction.

Omnitrix

An Omnitrix is a must have role play toy for any Ben 10 fan. These watch like devices are central to the whole Ben 10 theme. They are what allows Ben to transform into his various alien life forms.
The only two Omnitrix worth buying are the Deluxe Omnitrix from the original cartoon series or the Ultimate Omnitrix from the Alien Force sequel. There are various other older versions around, such as the Omnitrix F/X or Alien Viewer, but they are not worth the money.
For an Omnitrix with a built in computer type mini game on a small black and white LCD screen, choose the Deluxe Omnitrix. However, this version is not suitable for children who cannot yet read.
For a two-in-one toy for children who prefer the aliens from the latest series, such as Spidermonkey and Humungousaur, choose the Ultimate Omnitrix. The watch comes with a mini translucent alien figure that can be played with separately or attached to the watch.

Action Figures

For children who do not have favourite alien characters, choose figures from the latest Alien Force sequel as they are more readily available so you should be able to pick them up for under £5. The previous series figures are hard to find so come with a hefty price tag.
For value for money, a larger selection of the smaller 10cm figures will offer more fun to a Ben 10 fan, than the larger, more expensive figures.
Buy multi figure packs where available to keep costs down.
Have a look at the creation chamber figures. They are a two-in-one toy as you get two aliens in the one box for around £6. The figures are pretty small but you can swap parts between them to create your own hybrid aliens.

Games

Stay away from some of the board games as they tend to be boring and repetitive.
Choose a video game as they offer a lot more fun and lasting play for not much more money.
Buy one of the many puzzles for a quiet time game.
Buy the Top Trumps card game for an easy to carry along game, with attractive, detailed cards of each of your child's favourite characters.

Use the above checklist to give you a heads up when trawling through all the Ben 10 toys available.

What Makes a Super Pocket Rocket Different From Regular Minibikes?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you're not a fan of pocket bike, or if you have never bought a minibike, the term "Super Pocket Rocket can be confusing. For starters, the term" Pocket Rocket "is not just a Mini Bike - Mini Bikes are, after all what they are not motorized and are good old-fashioned bicycles Just. These rockets generally refer to miniature motorcycles - or mini bikes, they are sometimes called - that are built specifically for racing and / or display.

And farfrom being redundant, a super pocket rocket is more than an ordinary mini moto. If you still aren't sure how a big pocket rocket would differ from a regular mini motorbike, here are some of the most common and most noticeable differences:

1. Engine size. This refers to more than just the physical size of the engine, although of course that figures, as well. As any good motorist knows, engine capacity determines engine size, and it is measured in ccs or horsepower.

The larger number of the cc on a bike, the more powerful it is, and the faster it goes. Some super mini motos could go as fast as 70 km per hour. There's really no way to mistake them for toy vehicles - these babies are built for racing!

Many super minibikes can go over 70cc, and even go as high up as 110 cc. Ordinary minibikes, even ones that were made at home, could be fitted with 50 cc engines or smaller.

2. Seat height. Super pocket motorbikes may have seats that go as high up as 28 inches or higher, when regular minibikes may have seats that go lower than 25 inches. Note that some manufacturers measure seat height by millimeters instead of inches.

3. Bike size. In order to accommodate a larger engine and a higher seat, super pocket mini motos should also be larger than their regular counterparts. Their dimensions may even approach those of full-sized motorcycles, but it should still be easy to distinguish them from larger bikes.

Size may be the main difference between a super pocket rocket and a regular minibike, but the make is also important. The former, for example, is made for racing, regardless of how it is used, and it should show in the design. A mini dirt bike may come larger than usual, but this should not be mistaken for a super minibike. Take note of the wheels - large, thick wheels are made for the trail, not for the track.

Kids and Cardboard Boxes - The Most Underrated Toy Ever!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Like many people, my family are feeling the full weight of the recession, so the most aggressively marketed toys and video game consoles are definitely off the shopping list for now! However, when I was clearing out some old cardboard boxes from my office a few weeks ago, I was reminded of the old cliche: that kids get more enjoyment from the packaging than the gift. I decided to put the theory to the test, and I think the results are worth sharing with other parents.

Caveats

First of all, I know that many people will read the opening paragraph above and wonder if I'm a tree-hugging, anti-commercial luddite, so I want to assure you that this is not the case! Like many parents, I sometimes find it difficult to suggest activities for my kids to do, and I probably resort to using the TV more often than I should. This article is simply one little gem that worked for me, and hopefully others will benefit too. It is also worth pointing out the ages of my children: my daughter is 4, and her little brother is 2.

The Pitch

Armed with enough old, torn cardboard to bury a small car, a roll of packing tape and a scissors, I gathered the kids together. "Who wants to make... a ROCKET", I asked. Immediately, their eyes lit up, and I had their attention, although I did have to explain that it wouldn't really fly.

The Build

It was at this point I realized that I was going to have to do a lot of the initial work myself, because the cardboard was too thick for little hands to cut. A few of the boxes were reasonably intact, so I quickly stacked them on top of each other to make the body. To get the kids more involved, I lay it horizontally on the ground, and got them to lie down beside it, so I could measure where to put the window. After that, they 'helped' by crawling in and out of the body, which had now been dubbed 'The Tunnel'.

While they were busy, I cut out a few more pieces: one for the nose cone, and a few for the fins. Putting it all together was a snap, and took maybe 10 minutes from start to finish, and admittedly, it showed. In one sense, the finished piece looked exactly like an assemblage of old cardboard stuck together with tape, but to the kids, nothing could convince them that this wasn't a rocket. The fact that it reached up to the ceiling only made it more impressive!

The Response

Maybe my kids are easily amused, but the excitement in our home that evening was palpable! The fact that it was big enough to house both of my children was a big bonus, and soon their imaginations took over. They were enacting little stories, playing hide and seek, and they even figured out a way to move the rocket while they were still inside it. Bedtime stories that night revolved around flying to distant planets, but in the back of my mind, I expected the novelty to wear off quickly.

Over the following days, the initial excitement did die down, but to my surprise, it was replaced with a different kind of enthusiasm: decorating the rocket. Every day for the past few weeks, they've been painting small patches, drawing little people on it, even sticking a little bit of kitchen foil on it to make it look more like a spaceship. I was especially impressed when they found some orange tissue paper left over from Halloween: they stuck it to the base of the rocket because they thought it looked like fire!

Conclusion

I wrote at the beginning that I wasn't a frugal parent that would deny my kids everything their peers took for granted. However, I no longer look at this project as building a cheap toy, but rather as an engaging, ongoing activity. There is a big difference between a toy and an activity, and I sensed that my kids got a lot more enjoyment out of this, than they did out of many fly-by-night branded products.

So why didn't I try this before? In hindsight, I probably didn't think I would do a good job. Guess what? I didn't, but I know now that it doesn't matter. If you're curious, I added a photo of our cardboard rocket at this page (before it was painted). Pretty rough, isn't it? And I'll bet you could do better, so why not try it with your kids? I think it lit a small fire under their imagination, but they ran with it much further than I expected them to!
